Umbrellas up! Inside the Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- It's one Mardi Gras parade that lights up The Strand in Galveston like no other.

The Uptown Funky Umbrella Brigade brings out dozens of Krewes, all competing to be the most spirited, the most colorful, the wildest.

The Klear Kreek Krewe has taken a top prize in six out of the last seven years.

"We decided to form a Krewe and set a theme and enter the contest to try and win the prize, a balcony party, and just have a lot of fun," Meresa Fincher said with a smile.

Fun and then some.

It all starts with the decorating the umbrellas. A party in itself, and make no mistake, the Klear Kreek Krewe is in it to win it.

Meresa said, "We have won with our themes: the Queen of Hearts, Beetlejuice, Golden Girls, Bob Ross was a really good one."

Greg Jackson added, "The first two times we did it, I didn't know we were being judged. I thought it was just for fun."

His wife Terri was all in with the competition, "We're here to win, we're here to win every year. That's the goal here, we are sore losers."

Her son, Landon, knows his mother, "Since we started winning, she's gotten very competitive."

For 2026, the Klear Kreek Krewe's theme is Mardi Gras in the Emerald City. The Krewe decorated emerald green umbrellas galore with Oz costumes for a little bit more. From the Good Witch to the Wicked Witch, plus Oz himself, the Klear Kreek Krewe brought Emerald City to life.

This year, the group was awarded Best Cartoon.

When the Klear Kreek Krewe reached the parade finish line, Terri was ecstatic, "We are awesome, we're in it to win it. YEA!"
