TxDOT announces total closure of FM 2100 at Huffman Eastgate

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A major road closure begins in northeast Harris County starting on Monday at 7 a.m. and will last until 5 a.m. on Thursday.

TxDOT said the FM 2100 and Huffman Eastgate Road intersection will be shut down during that time. This comes as first responders told ABC13 that construction in the area causes issues for them and other drivers.

It has now been three years since construction began on this project, according to officials.

In that time, first responders said it caused delays and crashes in the area.

The $55 million TxDOT project will widen FM 2100 from two to four lanes.

"With all the construction up here, there's basically two lanes, no shoulders. When you get further up north, it's almost like a drop-off. The ditch is very deep, so there is literally nowhere for people to go," Huffman Fire Department Assistant EMS Chief Cody Nance said.

Huffman FD and EMS previously told ABC13 they have had several minor crashes involving a firetruck and delays caused by this construction.

First responders said multiple fire trucks have gotten into minor crashes as drivers try to go around them or slide next to them.

TxDOT officials claimed there are no obstructions preventing emergency vehicles from moving around the roadwork.

The state agency warns drivers they may experience delays, and encourages people in the area to be careful if driving, walking, or biking near any construction activity.

TxDOT said construction is scheduled to finish next fall, depending on weather and other conditions.

As far as getting around construction this week, detours include taking Iron Ore Road and Pebble Drive.
