A tiny hobby with big imagination

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) -- There's many meanings to the word nuts. For a group of ladies, it's an acronym for their group, 'Nuther Unique Tiny Society.

A world you've probably never heard of, but it's one full of creative miniature artists and crafters who share a unique obsession. Houston/Galveston NUTS Club President Mandy Hebert tells ABC13's Localish why.

"We create miniatures because we find it magical. There is something satisfying about taking something that is complex and real in the world and making it smaller and interesting. It draws people in," Herbert shares.

Many club members didn't know the tiny, detailed world existed until they stumbled upon it, like Debra Bennett, "I've been collecting miniatures since I was in the 4th grade, but who knew there was a miniature world out there? I didn't."

Group member Amy Burgess found NUTS at an Art Fair in Dallas," I was looking for people who shared the same interest. I didn't know this existed."

The 'Nuther Unusual Tiny Society' group was founded in 1980. Dorothy Hamilton, 95, joined that same year.

"My husband and I built custom dollhouses. Someone said you should get in with that club. I said what club? So that's how we got started. I'm the last of the Mohicans."

Dorothy says being part of this miniature society keeps her young, "Being in NUTS keeps me sharp and stimulated and it keeps me thinking about what I'm going to do next."

"I love this club because it allows me to grow, create, and learn from the other members. I really love the community we create, we really support each other, and we enjoy being with each other," Hebert shared.

Debra adds, "I really love NUTS because these people are family to me. I'm a military brat, so having friends for a long time was nothing I've ever had. This is a long-time group, and I love it."

These miniature enthusiasts recommend the small-scale hobby to everyone. If you're interested joining the group, reach out to them on Instagram.
