This comes as the city has said it needs the money, or it will run out.
La Marque is one of four cities in Texas that received a letter from Attorney General Ken Paxton demanding a stop to what he's calling a potentially illegal property tax increase.
The AG's office claims La Marque did not comply with state auditing requirements, saying the city filed required paperwork in September when it was due in March.
The letter states that because of this, they are launching an investigation to determine if their new property tax rate is legal and demanding that the new tax rate not be implemented until the investigation is finished.
Paxton says La Marque is in violation of SB 1851, which was passed during the last legislative session, and says that cities that do not meet the state's auditing requirements may only raise taxes enough to maintain the previous year's amount of revenue.
The City of La Marque responded in a statement on Thursday, saying they do not believe they are in violation of the law and they've been consulting with their legal counsel, adding the following:
"We are fully cooperating with the Attorney General's Office and will be providing all requested documentation to demonstrate our understanding and application of the law. Please know that we take all legal and financial compliance matters seriously."
As for the overall financial picture, it was last month that the city said they only had enough cash to cover about two weeks of operations, saying the money problems are tied to a pattern of spending more than what was brought in.
