The agency said it responded to a home on Cicada Lane and John F. Kennedy Boulevard for a welfare check and disturbance just before midnight.
"We were let in by family members," HCSO Major Al Blenderman said.
The sheriff's office said those family members, including children, were evacuated after deputies learned a male suspect had barricaded himself and a woman in a bedroom.
A SWAT team was called to the scene in an attempt to get that suspect out of the room.
"SWAT arrived around 1:11 a.m.," Blendeman said, telling ABC13 they made entry into the room a little after 2 a.m.
"They found the female deceased," he said. "The male had a gunshot wound to the head area."
Blenderman said the man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The sheriff's office said the man and woman were in a relationship and lived in the home.
Blenderman was asked if this could be a murder-suicide attempt related to a domestic dispute.
"It's still under investigation at this time," he said.
