HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A welfare check at a Cypress house ended in a large marijuana operation bust that sent a retired Houston Police Department sergeant to jail, court documents reveal.

Marilyn Shaughnessy, 65, is charged with possession of marijuana of over 50 pounds, according to documents obtained by Eyewitness News.

According to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement records, Shaughnessy is a retired HPD sergeant with 29 years of experience.

The alleged operation, according to investigators, occurred at a house on Woodsburgh Lane in the Cypress area. Court documents reveal officers responding to a welfare check walked through the front door and found the marijuana, along with other materials to suggest a growing operation was taking place.

According to the records, deputies found multiple marijuana plants and a THC oil extraction device at first. The records go on to allege that after deputies obtained a search warrant, they returned to find plants in the garage with UV lights, more oil extraction devices, over 80 pounds of marijuana, a loaded gun, and cannabis gummies.

A financial affidavit shows that Joseph Johnson, 37, is a co-defendant in the alleged grow-house operation and lists his occupation as a bitcoin miner.

Eyewitness News reached an attorney for Shaughnessy, who said, "Ms. Shaughnessy is not guilty," and nothing beyond that.
