The salaries for the eight selected constables are set to spike up to $293,000 each. Right now, they make about $178,000 per year, after also getting a raise in 2024.
But this isn't a done deal yet until the budget is approved.
Meanwhile, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Commissioner Rodney Ellis voted against the raises.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office want more money, as do the eight elected constables in the county. This all comes on the heels of pay raises that were approved for the Houston Police Department in May.
That same month, county commissioners voted to approve pay parity with HPD.
According to a proposal posted online by the Harris County Deputies' Organization, a deputy's starting pay would go from around $57,000 to $78,000 should commissioners approve these raises.
Majors, assistant chiefs, and chiefs within the Harris County Sheriff's Office would also make more money under this proposal.
ABC13's news partners at the Houston Chronicle have reported the constables would like their salaries to nearly double as a result of the proposed raises for sheriff's deputies.
Hidalgo said she supports raises for law enforcement, but there's no money for it. On Thursday, the budget director told commissioners the county is $209 million short with its upcoming budget.
The increase in police pay, he said, will cost about $100 million. In order to close the gap, commissioners will make decisions at next month's meeting.
A new budget has to be in place by October.
