The Harris County Sheriff's Office said on Thursday night, a 28-year-old man and former Marine was found shot to death on the side of the road near Lakewood Forest Drive in northwest Harris County. They said the suspect is still on the run.
Quoc Hieu Jake Nguyen, who family members simply call Jake, was a man his brother said put family first. His older brother, Matthew Nguyen, said he was 28 and served in the military before coming back to Houston to take care of his disabled mother and other siblings.
Matthew described him as easy-going, helpful, and loved getting to know people. He also said he was working as a rideshare driver to help make ends meet.
He said the main focus for the family right now is honoring the man who they say kept them all connected.
"He had a demeanor where he was laid back and enjoyed family time. Any time we would have something, he was usually the first person to respond and let everybody know he was down and always dependable. He came through at any request, so he was truly a family guy, and I felt like he held the mold together," Matthew said.
Matthew said the family has received an outpouring of support, and many people who served with Jake in the Marines reached out to him.
