GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade is entering its fourth decade and it's bigger and brighter than ever. This year, 29 fabulous floats will roll through the streets of Galveston. The favorites are back, including the Peacock and the Pirates head floats, both dating back to 1985 when Mardi Gras Galveston made its grand return.

There's a different theme every year. For 2026, it is "Carnival of the Cosmos."

Galveston native Mick Doherty is this year's Parade Marshal. A job he takes pride in, family pride.

"My parents and a bunch of their friends were the ones who brought Mardi Gras back to Galveston in 1985," Doherty said. "I've always been around it. I love the opportunity, I love the chance. I want to put on a good parade and make sure everyone is satisfied with their ride."

Two floats were rebranded with this year's celestial theme for a ride through the skies. Doherty said, "Carnival of the Cosmos, we could have gone a lot of different ways. We didn't want to be too hokey with aliens and stuff. We were thinking more celestial bodies."

Also, this year, the George Mitchell float is back. Back in the 1980s, George Mitchell saw the rekindled interest in reviving Mardi Gras in Galveston.

"We wanted to give tribute to him. It was with his monetary help, along with others, that helped bring Mardi Gras back to the island. I thought it was important to have him on here."

Mardi Gras Galveston is rich in history, 40 years strong in its return. So whether you're throwing the beads or catching them, come ready to celebrate. It's an experience Doherty has enjoyed for years, "it's one of my favorite parts of the parade, seeing all the people. I see myself in all the kids screaming for beads. It's great for the island. I'm glad to be part of it."
