Prairie View fires city secretary, suspends city manager after street improvement contract approval

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (KTRK) -- Prairie View politics took center stage Friday afternoon during a heated city council meeting.

After nearly two hours and lots of discussion, the city council voted to fire the city secretary and put the city manager on a 30-day suspension.

"There are some issues that relate to a grievance or some contractual grievance that we had discussed," Mayor Ronald Leverett said.

Leverett said he called the meeting to discuss terminating the city manager and city secretary after he accused them of moving forward with a street improvement project without city council approval.

City Manager Wendy Parker and the City Secretary Jamie Branch defended their actions, saying the roads are now safer after the improvement project.

"I have done nothing, my city staff has done nothing, my city secretary has done nothing. We are 1,000% innocent on anything that they're accusing us of right now," Parker said.

"I'd like for the council to explain to me first what I am up against, (and) what the grounds are so I can put forth an actual defense. I don't want to participate in a kangaroo court," Branch said.

While there was no public comment from community residents, Parker says everything she does is for the residents.

"We want to be the best stewards for our citizens in the city of Prairie View," Parker said.

The council also voted for Parker to give an interim title when she returns from her suspension.
