At about 6 p.m., officers were searching car trunks on Burnett and Fulton as they looked for a suspect involved in a METRO bus shelter shooting early Thursday morning.
The METRO Police Department revealed the shooting occurred near 900 Crosstimbers at Airline at about 5:30 a.m.
A woman in her mid-40s was shot in the head and is in critical condition after undergoing surgery, according to METRO PD Chief Ban Tien.
The suspect was taken into custody but had to be hospitalized because of a K-9 bite he suffered during apprehension, Tien said. He was released to his parents, who agreed to bring him in for questioning. Around 5:30 p.m., the suspect was in a second-floor interview room at the METRO police building on N. San Jacinto, when he escaped, said Tien. He was still in handcuffs.
Eyewitness News was at the scene as METRO, University of Houston, and Houston police officers, along with Pct. 1 deputies, launched a ground and air search.
At about 7 p.m., Skyeye was overhead on Danna and Fulton when the suspect was found. He was shirtless and still wearing one handcuff on his wrist, police said. A neighbor's surveillance video caught him walking down the street before lying on the ground and surrendering to police.
Tien said the teen, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, was not armed. The gun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered earlier in the day.
"Unfortunately, it happens," Tien said of the escape, but promised a full investigation.
The shooting on Thursday is the latest in a string of violence on METRO property, including a deadly shooting on a bus and a man charged with spraying mace on a train that sickened passengers.
"There are hundreds of thousands who ride every day, and many are extremely uneventful," Tien said.
