The single-vehicle crash was reported at about 4:43 a.m. on SH 288 southbound at Spectrum Boulevard near Beltway 8, according to Houston TranStar.
SkyEye13 flew over the heavy backups from the crash, where Pearland PD said one person was killed.
The outbound lanes of the highway will be closed for an extended period of time as police continue their investigation, the department said.
Drivers are told to expect delays and are asked to seek alternate routes.
Police said the northbound traffic on SH 288 remains operational, as well as both directions of the toll road.
