HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police are investigating a deadly crash in southeast Houston that officers say happened when the driver was running from Harris County Precinct 2 Constable deputies.

Investigators said deputies encountered the driver of a blue Dodge Charger driving recklessly and speeding on the Gulf Freeway around 5 a.m. Saturday.

Sgt. Derrick Hall with the Houston Police Department said deputies chased the driver for about five minutes on and off the freeway, but he refused to stop.

Officers said the driver then got off the freeway and ran multiple red lights. Sgt. Hall said the crash ended at the Almeda Genoa and Clearwood intersection when the driver of the Charger lost control.

Investigators said the car went airborne and slammed into a tree.

"That impact killed the passenger, but the driver is still alive. The driver is at HCA Hospital. We have vehicular crimes unit out here, taking pictures, and measurements. With the suspect still alive, we've talked with the DA's office, he's going to be charged with felony murder," Sgt. Hall said.

HPD said they are still searching for video surveillance.

Officers said it is unclear why the driver refused to stop.

Investigators said they are still working to learn if drugs or alcohol played a role; they said DWI units responded to the hospital to determine that.
