Pasadena man charged with kidnapping neighbor, police say

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) -- Police say a woman was watched, kidnapped, and sexually assaulted at the Emerald Pointe Apartment complex in Pasadena.

An alert went out Monday afternoon from those same investigators because they believe her alleged attacker may have also targeted other victims. The man accused in that case, according to police, was the woman's neighbor.

Investigators said it happened earlier this month -- at the Emerald Pointe Apartments on Houston Avenue, just about a half mile from the police department.

Monday night, they urged anyone with information to reach out to the police department here in Pasadena.

Neighbors were stunned and some were scared on Monday morning to hear that someone nearby was accused of kidnapping a fellow neighbor and taking advantage of her.

"He said he believed she was a slow learner or possibly had a disability and took advantage of it. So I do find him a danger to the community," a hearing officer said in court.

In court Monday morning, Jose Maldonado Zavala was ordered to stay 1,000 feet away from his neighbor.

Investigators say he had been watching the woman and grabbed her while claiming her AC was leaking into his apartment.

"He did confess to forcing the complainant into his apartment," the hearing officer said.

Court officials said that's when Maldonado held the victim down and touched her inappropriately.

A neighbor who was afraid to be identified said she had no idea this was happening so close to her and plans to be more aware of her surroundings.

Meanwhile, the apartment management at Emerald Pointe told ABC13 they were unaware of this investigation.

Maldonado Zavala is being held on a $100,000 bond for the kidnapping charge. Police say sexual assault charges are pending.

If you or someone you know has had an interaction with the suspect and believes a crime may have occurred, please file a police report at the front desk of the police station or contact Detective E. Guerra at 713-475-4909 or eguerra@pasadenatx.gov
