Paint problems for a local military family

SPRING, TX (KTRK) -- Painting your home can be a huge hassle. that's why a couple in spring hired a company to do the work for them.

The painters Bob and Shirley Mathews hired did most of the prep work on their home in Spring and it seemed like everything was fine.

"They came in and started hitting it like beasts, and we thought this is going to be good and then after Saturday it was, 'the beast was gone,'" said Bob Mathews.

Mathews says the workers stopped showing up. Finishing the job took on added urgency because Bob's military assignment is taking him to Alaska very soon and the Mathew's hoped to rent the home out in a matter of days.

"I am really stressed out because we are leaving in a few days," said Shirley Mathews.

The couple says they paid the painter $900 up front which is half the total cost. The Mathew's say they were told the job would take just a few days, but days later the job was not finished.

"At first they answered our calls and said, 'Yeah, we will get them right down there, we will get them right down there', but nobody ever showed and then it got to where they would not answer our calls or return our texts," said Bob Mathews.

Eyewitness News called both numbers listed on the company's business card. It turns out one of those numbers belongs to the painter's brother who has nothing to do with painting. When we explained the problem, it was the painter's brother who apologized and promised to get the work restarted. Moments later, the Mathews got a call too reassuring them the job will get done.

"Getting a call from channel 13 makes a difference I guess," said Shirley Mathews.

As of Friday morning, work has resumed and is on track to be finished before the Mathew's leave town.
