HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A routine traffic stop turned into a shooting when an officer shot a suspect with a felony warrant who was resisting arrest, according to the Houston Police Department.

Police said officers stopped a driver for a traffic violation on Tidwell Road near Hirsch Road in northeast Houston at 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

At that point, officers learned the driver had an outstanding felony warrant and tried to arrest him, according to Assistant Chief Christy Smith.

Smith said the suspect was uncooperative and started to struggle as officers tried to take him into custody.

During the struggle, officers used a Taser on the suspect and later shot him, according to Smith. She did not say whether the same officer used both the Taser and the gun or if it was two different officers.

Smith said the suspect was critically injured and taken to the hospital, but no one else was hurt.

According to Smith, there were two other passengers in the suspect's vehicle at the time.

Police said the District Attorney's Office, the Homicide Division, and Internal Affairs are all investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Smith said the investigation will later reveal whether the suspect was armed.
