Nearly 200 Dallas County students suspended over school dress code violation

DALLAS, TX (KTRK) -- Nearly 200 students were suspended in two days at one Dallas County high school, and it's all over the school dress code.

Students staged a sit-in Thursday after 170 kids were sent home the day before from Duncanville High School.

Police were called. A huge food fight inside forced students outside before they were ushered back in. Another 50 students were suspended Thursday.

The dress code at Duncanville High School includes tucked in collared shirts, belts and closed-toed shoes. Students can be suspended for violations, but they say this week was the first time the dress code was enforced.

"I also think that booting them out because they are choosing now to enforce this is also not good," mom Veronique Maston said.

The principal at the school said these sweeps are done three to four times a year.

In 2003, about 700 students were sent home during a two-month period.
