The situation unfolded in the 2600 block of Basil Point Court shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when a woman called 911, saying her 47-year-old husband had been drinking and firing gunshots into the air.
ABC13 spoke to neighbors who said they heard the gunshots early this morning..
"It was just like rapid, I guess, just like pow, pow, pow, and then afterwards it was a little bit louder, then it was like a shooting back, I guess," neighbor Daniela Garcia said
.
According to the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office, deputies arrived and couldn't find the man initially, but eventually spotted him in the backyard with a gun in his hand.
"When they looked out back window, they saw him sitting on back porch with a weapon in his hand. They looked to see what he was able to do, or not do with the gun, upon them opening the back door, the suspect pointed the gun at them, we think it may have discharged at that time, our deputies returned fire and the suspect fled," Assistant Chief Deputy Lofton Harrison, Harris County Pct. 1., said.
The suspect jumped a fence, but was caught and detained, deputies said. He was taken to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen
In an update, officials said he is charged with the aggravated assault of a police officer and is recovering.
A former neighbor told ABC13 he's known the suspect for around 5 years and can't believe this happened.
"It caught me really off guard with me knowing him, I'm sorry to hear, he's a real nice guy," he said. "But I never thought that would happen."
There were no other injuries reported.
Per policy, Precinct 1 says the deputies will be placed on temporary administrative leave while the case is reviewed.
