Man posing as wedding venue operator arrested after becoming the subject of a true crime podcast

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Justin Sayles is the host of the popular true crime podcast The Wedding Scammer, and after seven episodes over two years, the man at the center of it all, Carl John Butcho, has been arrested.

"He was somebody I spent all this time looking into. I'd spoken to so many people who were wronged. So many people that he'd owe money to, that he'd broken their trust and ruined their dreams," Sayles said.

Some of those dreams were supposed to be beautiful weddings held at Charleston Lane, a venue on Lake Conroe in Willis.

Back in May, we reported several Houston area couples were out of thousands of dollars after booking their weddings before it suddenly shut down.

One of them was Cindy Ou.

"We spent 20 months to plan this day, and these kinds of things happen once in your lifetime. At the time, we didn't know what to do," Ou said.

Ou shared documents showing that she paid around $52,000 for a wedding package. Instead of celebrating what would've been one of the greatest days of her life, she had to find a backup while the man whom they poured all their trust into was gone.

"The podcast came out in October of 2023, and I'm not trying to pat myself on the back that I had a lot of listeners. The fact that he was able to continue operating and that these people were put in this position was frustrating," Sayles said.

Nearly three months after Ou's story, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said in a joint effort with the Austin Police Department, they were able to arrest Butcho after what they say was an extensive investigation, claiming he used an alias "Lance Miller" and operated Charleston Lane.

The Sheriff's office reports 12 people never had their dream wedding, which altogether cost them more than $200,000.

Sayles hopes this arrest will prevent him from ruining what were meant to be people's dreams.

"Every single time his picture gets out there, every single time his real name gets out there, every single time people can collect the aliases. I think that's harder for him to do in the future, and this is my hope," Sayles said.

The sheriff's office also reported that he owes five people a total of about $12,000 in refunds.

He's booked into Travis County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
