Man shot and killed during argument at gathering with colleagues in SE Houston: HPD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A get together between work friends took a deadly turn Sunday morning in the city's southeast side, according to the Houston Police Department.

The deadly shooting happened at about 3:29 a.m. in the 3600 block of Mainer. Police said the residents invited over a couple of work colleagues, and they were drinking together, hanging out, when an argument ensued.

According to officers, an argument between one of the guests and one of the residents prompted the suspect to pull out a weapon and shoot the guest.

Officers say the man shot and killed was in his 30s and did not live at the home, but was a coworker of the father who lives there.

Neighbors told ABC13 they heard the deadly gunfire.

"I was asleep and heard maybe about five to 10 gunshots, rang out pretty loud and then I started seeing the cops, the ambulance, the firetruck and figured something had to have happened," Remel Newton II, a neighbor in the area, said.

Detectives and the crime scene unit blocked off the busy road, on the same street as a church, for several hours as they worked to figure out what exactly led up to the bullets going off.

"We do have witnesses, and we do have people on scene who we believe have more details and we are speaking to them," HPD Detective Ashley Finlay said. "And everyone seems cooperative, so we do think we'll get a good idea of what happened."

Investigators also said they have several people detained for questioning and they recovered the murder weapon at the scene.

The names of the suspect and victim have not been released.
