Court records say that 39-year-old Kyle Chris walked through the front doors of Zwink Elementary School with a gun after someone else who had left the school did not properly close the doors behind them.
Klein ISD told Eyewitness News the front doors are in working order, but did not respond when we asked if the person leaving held the doors open for Chris.
Records alleged that Chris was in military or tactical gear and had a gun and taser holstered when he went to the front office and asked the secretary if there was an armed officer on campus.
The district said an armed officer was on campus that day and was conducting rounds of the property.
Through flock cameras, law enforcement was able to trace Chris to his home about half a mile away, and he was arrested. Jail records show he was booked into the Harris County Jail on Wednesday and charged with having a weapon in an unauthorized place.
Some parents said the school should not have waited over 24 hours to inform families that an armed man was inside their child's school.
"I think it would have helped if it was a little bit sooner, but I feel like there wasn't a ton of information as far as what happened," parent Kamin Niehaus said.
In a letter to parents, the district said they waited to inform them to make sure Chris didn't learn of a possible arrest and flee.
"I think the email actually explained it pretty well on why they took their time. There was an investigation going on, so why would you want to tip in the culprit if they want to go get them," parent Dennis Nowinski said.
Outside of this charge, Chris has no other criminal record in Harris County.
One of Chris's neighbors said Chris is a veteran and a good friend. He feels this is a misunderstanding.
"He watches my kid all the time for me. When I was in California and gone for a couple of months, my son would come home, and he would go to the bus stop and walk him home, put him in the house, let him sit in there, he could go across the street and get the neighbor, you know what I mean," the neighbor, who only gave the name Randy, said.
Klein ISD said Chris has never had an affiliation with the district.
