HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Port Arthur ISD music teacher has been identified as the victim who authorities said was shot to death by his wife's ex-boyfriend during a custody exchange.

According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the shooting happened on Tuesday in the 12700 block of Blue Timbers Court in northeast Harris County. Authorities identified the suspect as 38-year-old Gary Davis and alleged that Davis shot and killed 36-year-old Marlon Sanders.

According to investigators, Sanders's wife was in a relationship with Davis while she was separated from Sanders. During the separation, she had a baby with Davis and allowed the baby to visit him for a couple of days, officials said.

When she and Sanders went to pick the baby up, Davis rushed out and shot Sanders, who was standing by his vehicle in the street, according to investigators, who added that no one else was injured in the shooting.

Officials said Harris County Precinct 3 deputies responded to the scene. Sanders was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Port Arthur ISD took to social media to share the tragedy and express their condolences.

"PAISD extends our deepest and most sincere condolences to the Sanders family and all who knew, loved, worked with, were taught or coached by, and enjoyed the talents of Marlon Sanders. Our beloved Adams Elementary School music teacher, Titans football and basketball coach, and singer/DJ/musician will be missed by so many," Port Arthur ISD wrote, while also sharing lighthearted videos of Sanders.

HCSO said that its CSI and Homicide detectives responded to the scene and conducted the investigation.

Davis was arrested, charged with murder, and booked into the Harris County Jail, authorities said.
