HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A funeral was underway when officers served a search warrant at an unlicensed funeral home in the Third Ward area, according to Houston Police Lieutenant Larry Crowson.

Houston Police Department officers served a search warrant at A Community Funeral Home, in the 2500 block of Wheeler Street, while a funeral was finishing up.

Crowson said another funeral home was called in to finish the services for the family of the deceased.

Officers were looking for financial records because they said they've gotten a number of calls from people whose loved ones used the funeral home for their services.

Crowson said the deceased have had their identities stolen and they suspect it happened at the funeral home.

"Apparently, the funeral home was using whatever information they had when the contract was executed for the funeral services and that's what is going on right now," he said.

Crowson said the funeral home is unlicensed, which they tell us is a crime.

He said that there are no bodies inside the funeral home, but there are several boxes of cremains.

Police sources told ABC13 the director of the funeral home was detained, but they are unsure at this point if the owner will be charged.

Harris County court records show the funeral home director was charged with forgery earlier this month.
