According to the Webster Police Department, a Chevrolet sedan lost control, crossed several lanes of traffic, and hit a concrete barrier just before 4 p.m. At about 5:30 p.m., police said a small child was confirmed dead as a result of injuries from the crash.
In an update Thursday, the officials said they believe there were nine people, including several children, in the sedan at the time of the crash. Investigators believe many of the occupants, including the children, were not properly restrained.
Authorities said multiple people were transported to the hospital with injuries, but their conditions remain unknown. Officials said they are still working to properly identify everyone involved in the crash.
SkyEye was overhead as two Life Flight helicopters arrived at the scene and loaded the victims onboard.
Police are investigating what led up to the crash, adding that excessive speed could be a possible factor, and toxicology results are pending.
Webster PD said it is working closely with the Harris County District Attorney's Vehicular Crimes Division.
