KLEIN, Texas (KTRK) -- A 17-year-old Klein Collins High School student has died after crashing her gasoline-powered bicycle, according to officials.

The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office said the teenage girl died near Klein Collins High School on Friday morning.

Klein ISD confirmed to ABC13 that the 17-year-old was on her way to school at that campus at the time of the accident.

"Please keep our student and their family in your thoughts and prayers," the district wrote in a statement distributed prior to confirmation of the student's death.

Initial reports from Klein ISD said she was riding an e-bike, but Precinct 4 Captain Vicente Medina said it was actually a "mini-bike" powered by gasoline.

"These kinds of bikes have become popular," he explained.

Medina said the girl's bike is illegal in Texas because it was motorized and lacked pedals.

The constable's office said e-bikes with pedals that stay under 28 miles per hour are legal to ride on roads, sidewalks, and bike paths in the state.

"It is supposed to be started by pedals, and then you can use the electricity to help keep you going," Medina explained of legal e-bikes.

Medina, who said this crash is still under investigation, told ABC13 the girl's parents could be cited twice as a result of this morning's accident, once for not wearing a helmet and once for operating an illegal mode of transportation.
