This year, it has been different for the Mustangs. They are playing in the memory of their former head coach, Pres Holcomb, who died about a year ago from colon cancer.
Head coach Adam Bell said before the state semifinals game a week ago that he's felt Coach Holcombs' presence at times this season.
"I think that final 40 seconds of the game show you what spirit is hanging over us right now, and I couldn't be more thankful," Coach Bell said after the Mustangs beat Forney to win their third state title in school history.
The Mustangs trailed Forney 1-0 until, with 46 seconds left to play, senior Tyler Weaver scored a goal to tie the score and sent the game into overtime. After two 10-minute overtime periods, still tied at 1, the game went to penalty kicks, and Weaver, who was named game MVP, scored the final goal to give the Kingwood girls the state title they hoped to win for their former head coach.
"I can feel his presence with us and being so happy for us," Weaver said.
"We knew it wasn't over. We had a guardian angel looking over us. We're all so happy, and I'm sure he is too, looking over us," senior defender Kate Kristiansen said.
