Deputies found Iona Pollard, 52, dead of an apparent gunshot wound. Her husband, 47-year-old David Pollard, is in custody, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.
David is charged with murder. His bond was set at $300,000.
Lamar CISD described Iona as a cherished instructional coach.
"We have learned of the devastating incident involving two of our own, Iona and David Pollard. Iona Pollard, a cherished instructional coach at George Junior High School, was tragically killed in an incident involving her husband, David. This terrible event occurred outside of school grounds and is under investigation by local authorities," a statement from the district read, in part.
Lamar CISD said Iona leaves behind two children, who are also part of the Lamar CISD family.
"The loss of their mother and the circumstances of this tragedy are incredibly heartbreaking. We extend our deepest condolences to the Pollard children, their families, friends, and all who knew Iona, particularly her colleagues and students at George Junior High," the statement read.
The district said the community must pull together to support each other. Counseling and support services are available for any student, staff member, or family needing assistance.
The sheriff's office hasn't given a motive for this incident. A spokesperson told ABC13 that there were no prior calls for service at the Pollards' residence.
"I think people, women, should be more aware of it and seek help," Lamar CISD parent Erica Alvarado said.
Fort Bend Women's Center CEO Vita Goodell says it's not always easy.
"You don't have to come into a shelter, although we have one," Goodell explained. "You don't have to get counseling, although we can help you with that, but just calling the hotline will give you the opportunity to create a safety plan."
More people are seeking assistance. The number of survivors that the agency assists is growing dramatically.
Last year, it helped 3,300 survivors, 1,000 more than the year before.
Goodell said it's not just with women, but men too. It can be with anyone.
Lamar CISD said David worked in law enforcement for years. The district's police department said he was the safety coordinator.
Despite being tasked with coming up with a plan to save students and staff, the district is now reeling from Iona's death and David's murder charge.
"It happens to rich people, poor people, people from everywhere," Goodell explained. I wish we knew the root cause, and maybe we could cure it, but we don't."
If you need help, the county's hotline is 281-342-HELP, or you can visit the Fort Bend Women's Center website where it features a chat function.
