HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A suspect has been charged in a crash that left a woman dead and a child hospitalized in northwest Houston on Tuesday, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD said that the suspect, 37-year-old Manuel Neri Mendoza, was charged with murder.

Police said the wreck, which took place on Clay Road and West Sam Houston Parkway around 1 a.m., left a 42-year-old woman dead.

HPD said that a 3-year-old child in the backseat was restrained and transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Furthermore, the boy was related to the woman, HPD said.

"The safety seat was tethered in three different places," Sergeant Rebecca Dallas said. "It does not appear the child has any injuries."

Police said the victim was attempting to drive on Clay Road when Mendoza ran a red light and hit her in the intersection. They believe that Mendoza was intoxicated.

"(Mendoza) attempted to leave the crash," Dallas said. "Some patrol officers found him about 100 yards from his vehicle."

ABC13 has learned Mendoza had two previous DWI charges in Harris County prior to Tuesday morning's deadly crash.

The ABC News Data Team took a closer look at DUI incidents in the City of Houston as a result of this deadly case.

The most complete set of data they found ranges from 2018 to 2023 and shows there were 445 DUI-related deaths in the City of Houston over that period. They found there were 570 DUI-related serious injuries over that same timeframe.
