First responders said they arrived at the scene of the crash between an 18-wheeler and a CenterPoint Energy utility vehicle on Friday around 9:30 a.m.
Images from the scene showed the 18-wheeler with damage to its front end and the utility truck on its side.
Sgt. Alejandro said two men were inside the CenterPoint Energy truck when the driver tried to merge unsafely and hit the front of the 18-wheeler.
Officials said the 18-wheeler then lost control, dragged the CenterPoint Energy truck, and pinned it to a light pole.
According to the Houston Fire Department, both men in the CenterPoint Energy truck were trapped, adding that the driver was freed first, but it took the crews nearly two hours to rescue the passenger.
Officials said that while the driver was not hurt, the passenger was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.
CenterPoint Energy sent the following statement on Friday afternoon.
"We are deeply saddened to share that one of our employees involved in this morning's incident on IH-610 South Loop has passed away. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family's privacy, we will not be sharing additional details at this time. We are providing support to his loved ones and to our team members. We are also grateful to the first responders for their efforts at the scene to provide medical assistance and support."
The Texas Department of Transportation said its crews were helping with cleanup and traffic control. They warned it could take several hours to clear the debris and urged drivers to take other routes.
Houston TranStar reported that all lanes were closed while officials investigated the crash, but the mainlanes on the South Loop reopened shortly before 3 p.m.
