Woman arrested for drug possession died in custody after swallowing unknown item during search: HPD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A woman who was arrested for drug possession on Wednesday night died after consuming an unknown substance during a search, Houston police say.

Police said the 29-year-old woman was pulled over for a traffic stop in the Greenspoint area around 11 p.m.

Officers said they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and found multiple narcotics inside. She was arrested for possession and taken to the Harris County Joint Processing Center.

Officers said while searching the woman, they found an unknown substance, which police say she ingested before they were able to confiscate it. She collapsed and was taken to the hospital, where she later died, police said.

An investigation is underway, and authorities said an autopsy will determine the woman's cause of death.



By ABC13's count, this is the 12th in-custody death so far this year.

According to records, there were 10 in all of last year, and 19 people died at the jail in 2023.
