"A lot of teachers spend their money on these things for the kids throughout the year. This freezes up that money for teachers and their families," Hays said.
Not long after the school year started, ABC13 followed Hays as he traveled across the city, making deliveries. His truck was filled with the basics students need, from calculators to notebooks.
"I walk into the schools with the supplies, and I just get smiles from everyone," Hays said.
He was also making deliveries for the food bank's Backpack Buddy program, which provides food for schoolchildren to take home over the weekend.
"It's all about the kids. It makes me feel good to help and be part of this," Hays shared.
