HPD says this happened on Tiltree Street near Fuqua in southeast Houston at about midnight Wednesday.
According to police, a man and his girlfriend were sitting in their garage having some drinks when they say five people wearing masks walked up from their side yard, then into their garage.
HPD said the girlfriend told them the first man who came into the garage had a rifle and started yelling at her boyfriend.
Police said the girlfriend then ran into the house to hide.
From there, HPD says there was some kind of fight and the boyfriend, who they say is 29 years old, was shot three times. He is in critical condition but should survive, according to HPD.
"There must be somewhere around 20 shots fired, maybe more. We recovered two weapons on the scene and quite a few casings. When the shooting was done, and the individuals took off running on foot, that's when the female came out of the house from hiding and found her boyfriend shot up," HPD Lt. R. Willkens explained.
Police said neighbors heard the shots fired, but so far, police say they have not been able to speak to anyone who heard what the people were saying.
Lt. Willkens says investigators are trying to figure out if this was possibly a robbery or if the suspects knew the victim. The motive is part of their ongoing investigation.
