According to Tx-DOT, the Houston Avenue Bridge has been struck 72 times so far this year.
Records show eight of those times were so dangerous that they required police investigations.
"The whole thing vibrates when they slam that bridge," Jeff Ali, who owns the McCarty Truck Park, said. "One day, I think it will collapse, in my opinion."
The Houston Avenue Bridge is 14 feet, three inches tall.
Tx-DOT says the reason it gets hit so often is because truck drivers are either ignoring their designated routes or aren't getting the special state permits required for any trucks with loads higher than 14 feet.
You can't miss the warning signs. Tx-DOT says there are even heavy-load detection systems along I-10.
"Probably people just have oversize loads and they're not checking it, they're not measuring it," Trucker Charles Camp said. "They know it's too tall. They just don't care."
"For those drivers with oversize loads, they have a route. They don't have to deal with low bridges," Trucker Rigo Marin said. "The main part is that you have to pay attention."
"Maybe people that are not local, not familiar with our bridges," Trucker Erik Martinez said.
You might remember that the Waco Street Bridge had the same issue.
Tx-DOT said it was hit four times in 2017, three times in 2018, and was raised by two feet back in 2020.
As for the Houston Avenue Bridge, lovingly known by Houston Police on the department's X page as the undefeated, undisputed champion, there's still some time left in the ring, even at 72 knockouts.
"This I-10 freeway has been done a long time ago, and I think at some point they need to come in and obviously update everything as time progresses," Ali said.
Tx-DOT's proposed White Oak Bayou expansion project raises I-10 above the bridge, so there won't be an issue with hitting it.
But it won't happen soon. Construction is expected to go from 2027 to 2028.
