Authorities said that a vehicle drove into a business at 3:10 p.m. at a Nothing Bundt Cakes store at 19250 West Lake Houston Parkway.
Investigators said the driver, a man in his 70s, said he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while attempting to park in front of the business. The truck drove through the front of the store, striking two people inside, a customer and an employee, deputies said.
Employees inside the store described hearing a loud crash before realizing what had happened.
"We thought the building was falling," employee Liliana Trevino said. She said that her manager notified them that their co-worker had been severely hurt.
Trevino's co-worker, identified as Zion Branch, was at the sales counter and was hit by the pickup truck. Authorities said that she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A customer inside at the time of the crash was taken to a hospital for treatment after being injured, but is stable, according to officials.
According to investigators, the driver of the vehicle was with his wife at the time of the crash, but they were uninjured. The driver also had no signs of intoxication in the incident, officials said.
Deputies said the investigation remains ongoing.
Once completed, the case will be forwarded to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.
