Collaborative for Children CEO Dr. Melanie Johnson joined Eyewitness News live Thursday morning to talk about the organization's focus on support for young neurodivergent learners.
Dr. Johnson said early childhood education is foundational for this demographic in particular, as it helps prepare them for the education system and the workforce.
"It completely depends on a strong, early start," she said.
Children who are neurodivergent have brains that operate differently. Dr. Johnson said classrooms with neurodivergent learners should operate differently. Sensory should be de-escalated, and transitions should be smooth.
According to Dr. Johnson, visual clues are also imperative so that these learners understand when it's time to move from one event to the next.
Collaborative for Children has aggregated 125 childcare centers across the greater Houston area, especially in low-income communities. They certify education coaches to teach teachers and parents how to create learning environments for all learners.
Dr. Johnson said it's important for parents to advocate for their children and find these programs. It can take a long time to build the infrastructure necessary in a place like Harris County, but she said it's worth it.
