On Thursday, Petersen was the topic of conversation for commissioners. Since it could've involved her job status, it took place behind closed doors.
"We talked about specifically Dr. Petersen today," Commissioner Tom Ramsey said. "We talked about our concerns."
Their concerns surround several flood mitigation projects. 11 projects have a completion deadline of next February, and if they're not finished, commissioners fear they could lose $330 million in federal funding.
For months, commissioners have asked Petersen for an update on the projects. When she couldn't tell them when the projects would be finished, Hidalgo said she lost confidence in her.
On Thursday, Hidalgo said that it hasn't changed.
"I don't feel any more confident than I did going forward," Hidalgo said.
Despite the concerns and private conversation, commissioners took no action. It doesn't mean more discussion isn't coming surrounding Petersen's job.
"I certainly intend to make sure there's an item on the agenda to make a final decision because it doesn't help anybody," Hidalgo explained. "Not the director. Not the team."
Hidalgo said she believes there needs to be a change, not just for local leaders, but also for the state and federal governments to work with them if they ask for an extension.
"The folks that stand to take away the money from Harris County are the leaders of the federal and state level," Hidalgo said. "If they're anything like me, they will want to see a change as well."
Not everyone is calling for Petersen to lose her job. Commissioner Adrian Garcia showed Petersen support during Thursday's meeting and pointed out they've known the projects wouldn't meet the February deadline for years.
Hidalgo remains the only one to publicly call for Petersen's removal, but Commissioner Tom Ramsey may not be too far behind.
"I'm sitting there with a critical eye because I know in terms of what we've had to do to make sure we keep these projects on a path for delivery," Ramsey said.
Ramsey said he's asked the county administrator to work with Petersen over the coming days and update them about the projects. In June, Ramsey said he plans to address this again because his confidence in Petersen's ability to lead the flood control district to get the projects done on time isn't high.
"It's not very good at this point obviously, because of what we've had to do just to intervene to get the data, which is a pretty straightforward process," Ramsey said.
ABC13 asked the flood control district spokesperson for a response regarding Hidalgo's comments. Eyewitness News was told that neither Petersen nor the agency would be issuing a statement.
