"Futurama" voice actors Phil LaMarr and Maurice LaMarche, along with executive producer David X. Cohen visited The Huntington in San Marino, Calif. last month.
Executive producer Claudia Katz, as well as writer Eric Horsted, and directors Edmund Fong and Peter Avanzino also tagged along to smell Odorysseus and Odora's famous rotting flesh smell in their last few hours of bloom before closing back up for years.
It's rare for both flowers to bloom at the same time, and each plant bloom lasts only 24-48 hours. The corpse flower blooms every two to three years.
While chatting with On The Red Carpet, LaMarche offered a detailed description of how the plants smell. "You know when there's a steak in the back of the fridge. It's been in there. You look at the expiration date, eh a week and a half (expired). You go and let me see, open it up *smells*. That! Plus, green."
Cohen echoed LaMarche's sentiments sharing, "I want the full experience. I do not want to be ripped off and get the lightly disturbing smell. I want full blast. So, I got my nose in there pretty deep. I would describe it to me today as a kind of a powerful dirt smell."
"By a fortunate coincidence, we have an episode, which is about a corpse flower. And, there's a shocking discovery. It gets a bit risqué and you'll have to watch the episode to see what happens after that," Cohen teased.
