During the primary runoff, officials said an employee uploaded the wrong voter registration list that impacted every voting site for hours. Elections Administrator Chase Wilson told ABC13 they want to change workflows, add more oversight, and implement vendor safeguards for November.
Next year, he said they even want to implement a new voter registration system. Measures that may be too late for Brittanye Morris.
"It's very different to lose a race and say, 'Oh, by the way, you shouldn't have been in it, or you were not qualified,' or something of that sort," Morris said. "That is the definition of sour grapes. This is more of people not being able to cast their vote."
Morris lost the Precinct 4 Democratic nomination by less than 150 votes. After a recount, she filed a lawsuit taking aim at what happened on election day.
People were able to use provisional ballots, but Morris worries the process took too long and drove voters away.
"There's lower voter turnout in runoffs in general," Morris said. "So, the people who took time out during their day to exercise their civic duty and vote, for them to be turned away, it's just unacceptable."
Election officials said the issue started at 2:30 p.m. In a records request, ABC13 obtained emails showing differing times as to when the issue was fixed.
The IT director told the judge's office it was at 5 p.m. However, the elections administrator's email said it wouldn't be resolved until 5:45 p.m.
During a news conference, Wilson said a worker uploaded the wrong file. ABC13 asked him multiple times if there was any disciplinary action taken against the employee, but he hasn't said.
While the administrator said they're looking to make changes, Morris wants her lawsuit to bring answers and accountability.
"We know that there's a mistake," Morris said. "We want to know what has been done because we have an election coming up in November. Again, it's not about me, it's about the people."
Morris' opponent, April Jones, sent ABC13 a statement about the lawsuit.
She said in part, " Because this matter is now pending before the court, it would not be appropriate for me to litigate the case through the media. My legal team will respond through the judicial process, where the facts and the law will determine the outcome. My focus remains where it has always been - serving the residents of Precinct 4, listening to our communities, and preparing for the work ahead and the general election."
