Firefighters had issues finding working hydrants while battling fire at SW Houston apartments: HFD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Firefighters said they had issues finding working hydrants while battling a two-alarm fire at a southwest Houston apartment complex overnight.

The Houston Fire Department responded to the heavy fire and smoke at the complex on Braesvalley and Renwick at about 2:30 a.m.

Crews said they faced challenges getting water because the building has no interior hydrants, and that the nearest street hydrant was broken. ABC13 is looking into whether complexes are required to have interior hydrants.

According to firefighters, storm conditions also made access difficult.

HFD said most residents, many of whom are elderly or disabled, were evacuated safely.

Investigators said the fire likely started on the top floor or roof and are not ruling out that it was storm-related or possibly arson.

The Red Cross was at the scene after firefighters said around 50 residents may have been affected.

Thankfully, firefighters said there were no injuries reported.
