Fire code violations notice put up at northwest Harris County apartment complex

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- If you walk to the front office of the Northbrooke apartments, you'll see a red notice from the Harris County Fire Marshals' office posted on Sept. 24 saying multiple fire code violations have been committed.

The complex is located along Hafer Road in northwest Harris County.

ABC13 spoke with one resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, saying he feared retaliation. He says he learned about the notice on Wednesday.

"It makes you feel very unsafe because you never know what can happen. There have been multiple times where some random kid is just going up to the fire alarm and has just pulled it just to pull it, and those don't get reset," he said. "So now we're wondering what happens if there's a fire here. Who could we lose because of that?"

According to the Harris County Fire Marshal's website, the violations are related to fire extinguishing systems that don't meet safety standards.

Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia says the county has been aware of fire-safety related issues at the property for most of the year, but didn't get into specifics on what the issues were.

"It applies to one particular building, but the entire property is being scrutinized by the fire marshal's office," Garcia said.

He says since the notice was put up, progress has been made, but there hasn't been enough for it to come down.

"The property owners need to upgrade to whatever codes are required of them, and if they don't, that creates problems on the enforcement side," Garcia said.

Garcia went on to say the last resort would be to move people out.

One resident, who didn't want to be seen on camera, also feared retaliation, says she wants to see more fire extinguishers and alarms. And while county leaders say work is being done, she still worries for her safety.

"I live on the bottom level, so I have two whole apartments on top of me, so if something goes on those two upper levels and I don't know anything about it, who knows what's going to happen to me? And I have kids at home, so I'd rather have my kids safe," she said.

ABC13 reached out to the property's regional management and did not receive a response about the violations.
