According to officials, the district police department is investigating. Witnesses say a civilian brandished a weapon to break up the fight between students.
Gang unit officers rushed the campus, pulling out students in handcuffs for questioning. Officers searched vehicles and removed several items. Carrying a large stick away from the campus, investigators are piecing together what happened.
Parents showed up at the school trying to get their children out of class and checking on their safety.
Grandmother Cynthia Talbert said, "This is sad. If you can't come here to get an education where can you get one?"
Several upset parents wanted answers from school administrators. Many are very angry and upset after a fight broke out yesterday on campus.
Witnesses tell Eyewitness News that this stems from a fight yesterday and is possibly gang related.
Several parents say they want to find an alternative school for their children because fights like this have been happening too frequently at the campus.
"You don't know what's going on," said mother Shonda Smith. "Every day I drop her off I'm praying that she's OK because I don't know what kind of phone call I'll get. I can't do it anymore. I told them I'm starting the transfer process."
"Parents have no business getting involved in their kids acting this way," Talbert said. "The community needs to come together and help our kids not hurt them."
HISD issued the following statement:
- "Before classes this morning, an altercation took place across the street from Worthing High School. As a result of the situation, additional officers have been assigned to the campus and police are investigating. Please be assured that all students are safe at this time and instruction is continuing as usual. Please know we take these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students is always our top priority. Administrators have alerted parents via call out. As more details are available they will be shared as well."
