Germany beat Curacao seven to one at NRG Stadium, also known as Houston Stadium, during the three-week-long tournament.
Even with the game over, World Cup festivities continued at the FIFA Fan Festival for much of the day.
However, there were two weather delays. One was around noon and lasted an hour, and another was around 7:30 pm and lasted less than an hour, according to officials.
"We're just watching the game, and the screens went off, and weather warnings popped on the screen," guest Dan Brown said.
Still, for most of the day, fans were able to enjoy the opening match.
Houston Stadium officials told ABC13 more than 68,000 people attended the match.
"We came here only for the game. But the drive through the city on the highway looked pretty. It was nice," a fan from Germany said.
The opening match proved memorable for many people. Twelve patients from Texas Children's Hospital got the chance to serve as FIFA World Cup flag bearers. They carried the two nations' flags on a worldwide stage.
Texas Children's said these children have overcome cancer, brain tumors, and other serious medical conditions.
Sunday's match was the first of seven that Houston will host, with the next match set for Wednesday.
"I definitely like the diversity. I know earlier I was talking to someone that was from Germany themselves, and we even had people coming in from Mexico," said FIFA Fan Festival Volunteer, Marcos Barrios. "I love hearing different stories. Just to be around that, in my opinion, it's super exciting."
