PEARLAND, Texas (KTRK) -- While the World Cup showcases soccer's biggest stars, three young brothers from Pearland are just beginning their own soccer journey.

LaShay Williams is the mom to Gianni, 11, Mekhi, 10, and the youngest, Xyiel, at age 7.

"Gianni started playing soccer at recess in second grade," LaShay remembers. "He's been playing ever since, and his brothers have been following in his footsteps."

Gianni told ABC13 that his favorite skill is the curve shot. Mekhi prefers the roulette to get away from defenders. As for Xyiel, his unforgettable memory is scoring a goal during a free kick.

"I didn't come from a family that played much sports, so when I see them on the field playing sports I get very excited," LaShay shared with us.

LaShay also told us the sport has helped her sons in unexpected ways.

"Soccer has taught my children to be disciplined. It's taught them to be more social," LaShay said. "A soccer ball can create relationships you never expected."

LaShay also admitted having three boys in sports adds up and can be expensive. She is thankful to have come across Every Kid Sports, which covered their registration fees.

"I am very grateful and appreciative for this program because, without them, I don't know if they would have been able to play," Williams said.

Every Kid Sports is a national nonprofit providing financial assistance for youth sports registration fees to kids from income-restricted families. This year, ESPN's Take Back Sports and Disney Jr. Let's Play! are teaming up with Every Kid Sports to help more families with preschoolers and young kids, opening the door to more play in their communities.

According to the Aspen Institute's Project Play, Youth ages 6-18 from low-income homes quit sports at six times the rate of kids from high-income homes.

Right now, qualifying families across the Houston area can apply for grants to cover fall registration fees.
