One woman reached out to ABC13 after there were only four spaces for her driver's license number.
The Voter Participation Center shared the following statement:
"This week, the Voter Participation Center (VPC) and Center for Voter Information (CVI) began to send vote-by-mail applications to 87,049 Texas residents aged 65 and older. We are aware of an error in the identification section of these mailings, where there are just four boxes for the recipient to enter their Driver's License, Texas Identification Card, or Election Identification Certificate number, rather than eight.
We have already been in touch with county election administrators and are sending an updated message for the state election office to send to all of the affected counties.
To reach the recipients of the erroneous mailers, we will soon send follow-up postcards that will state the requirement of including a full Texas Driver's License, Texas Identification Card, or Election Identification Certificate number. These postcards will also direct people to a state URL where they can correct an application already submitted.
VPC and CVI are sending a second round of mailings in Texas - which should reach recipients around September 9 - that will include applications with all required boxes.
We know that eligible and registered voters are on high alert as the November election approaches. We regret adding to any confusion, and are working with election officials in Texas to correct this error in current and future mailings."
ABC13 also contacted the Harris County clerk's office about the applications.
They confirmed they were not sent from their office, but encouraged voters with questions to contact them.
Eyewitness News received a statement from the county clerk's office:
"The ballot-by-mail applications you are referring to were not sent by our office. They were distributed by the Voter Participation Center, which is not affiliated with the Harris County Elections Department. The VPC applications did not provide sufficient space for voters to enter their Texas Driver License (TDL), Texas ID, or Election Identification Certificate information. The Voter Participation Center has informed our office that it has corrected the issue.
