Nancy Sims is a political science lecturer at the University of Houston. She said the economy is the big issue, but that's not necessarily an advantage for Democrats or Republicans.
"I think that's probably the number one issue that will drive election turnout," Sims told ABC13, "but what I'm seeing is that they don't necessarily see either party as the solution to that problem. And I think that's what's causing pundits to scratch their heads a little bit."
On your ballot will be the race for the U.S. Senate between Ken Paxton and James Talarico. Other key races are that for Governor, Lt Governor, and open seats for County Judge in Harris and Fort Bend Counties.
Perhaps bigger than any name on the ballot is the one that's not. President Donald Trump is a political force who has long defied convention. And despite low approval ratings nationally, he remains very popular among Republican voters.
"Because Donald Trump is a larger-than-life force who effectively has taken over the Republican brand," political science fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute, Mark Jones said. "Most Republican candidates realize they really can't distance themselves too much from the president, so they're better off embracing him with the goal of ensuring that his supporters actually turn out to vote this November, even though he is not on the ballot."
Just because it's summer, it doesn't mean campaigns are on a break. They are working hard on their Get-out-the-vote strategies. By September, you'll start seeing them on television and online.
In fact, Republicans are hosting a two-day midterm national convention in Dallas in September, which is a first for the GOP.
"It's designed to motivate and mobilize Republicans who support Donald Trump, but may not support Republicans more generally, to actually turn out to vote," Jones said.
While Election Day is Nov. 3, early voting in Texas starts Oct. 19. And that is just 84 days away.
