According to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office, deputies responded to a call about motorcyclists racing on the freeway. Authorities said a man on one of the motorcycles lost control and hit another vehicle.
The man then separated from the motorcycle, investigators said, adding that the man died at the scene.
The motorcycle then hit a separate vehicle on the roadway, which started a fire, officials said. The fire was put out with no injuries, according to Pct. 4.
Officials have not revealed the motorcyclist's identity.
Houston TranStar reported the incident shortly before 12 p.m. and said it involved one vehicle. TranStar also reported that all eastbound lanes, including the left shoulder, were shut down.
As of 3 p.m., TranStar reported that the scene was cleared and all eastbound lanes were reopened.
