Early voting underway ahead of 3 elections taking place in Harris County in May

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Monday is the first day of early voting in Harris County, as voters start casting their ballots in the special election for Texas' Senate District 4.

But, this isn't the only election taking place in May.

In fact, there are three elections happening over just 25 days.

"Texas state legislators, if you are listening to Teneshia Hudspeth, we need some support," Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said.

She'll be running three separate elections in May.

"I know sometimes voters say, 'Why can't you combine them all in one day?' Well, because the constitution doesn't allow for it. Primaries can't be combined with special elections. Uniform elections can't be combined with other elections," she explained.

Early voting started on Monday for Texas' State Senate District 4 special election.

Next week, early voting will start for the Houston City Council District C runoff.

A little more than two weeks after that, it's time for Texas' primary runoff election.

As of 3:40 p.m. on Monday, the clerk said 179 people had voted, which is .08% of eligible voters.

But, even if polling places are mostly empty, running them isn't cheap.

Just for an idea, Clerk Hudspeth said the 2024 presidential election cost Harris County taxpayers $17 million.

The elections happening this May are much smaller, but she said costs could still range from a million to more than $12 million for each one.

"Elections are costly, and taxpayers do pay for elections," Hudspeth said.
