"I saw the devastation in Venezuela, and I knew my daughter had a bunch of brand new clothes that she was going to donate, so I said, 'We need to do this for Venezuela,'" Janet Obidzigenski said.
La Mora restaurant and the Katy community have organized one of many donation drives asking people to bring anything from diapers to clothes.
Dana Jimenez is from Caracas, one of the places hit hard by the quakes. She said she was left on edge when the devastation happened.
"I was looking for my dad (for) 15 hours," organizer Dana Jimenez said. "Thanks to social media, a friend of a friend and a neighbor got together and (found) my dad because we posted pictures. (My dad) was able to send a voice (message) and say, ' Hey, I'm okay, don't worry, I'm helping other people.'"
Venezuelans are helping each other, and Houstonians are showing up to support. It's something Jimenez and others who have family and friends among the rubble say is needed now more than ever.
"We need medicine, especially medicines, anything, one thing can help because it's a mountain that goes up," organizer Yegni Carruyo said.
"Everything you can do right now for Venezuelans, it's something that is going to impact a life, is gonna help our community and we're humans and these people, they need our help right now," Jimenez said.
