HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Days after shots were fired during a "teen takeover" in Discovery Green over the weekend, park officials announced that they would be closing the park early and canceling events this Saturday.

PREVIOUS REPORT: Six arrested in connection to weekend 'teen takeover' in downtown Houston, police say

Discovery Green officials said on Friday that the park will be closing at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, at the behest of the Houston Police Department. According to Discovery Green's website, the park normally closes at 11 p.m. every day unless noted otherwise.

Along with the early park closing, park officials announced that the Flea by Night event and the Screen on the Green viewing of "Bend It Like Beckham" that were scheduled for Saturday evening are canceled.

Officials said the park will reopen on Sunday at 6 a.m.

ABC13 asked Discovery Green officials if the early closure was related to the previous weekend's "teen takeover" incident. Park officials said there is a "great deal of activity taking place in downtown this weekend, and Discovery Green was asked by the Houston Police Department to close at 8:30 PM on Saturday."

According to HPD, officers responded to reports of a disturbance to find more than 500 teenagers at Discovery Green on Saturday, June 13. Police said several shots were fired as they tried to disperse the massive and chaotic crowds at the park.

Police said that six juveniles were arrested in connection with the social media-advertised takeover.
