Deadline to protest property taxes nearing

Thursday, May 29, 2014
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston's booming housing market does have a down side. Property values are up and that means you will be paying more in property taxes if you don't take action.

The rising property values hit every homeowner; protesting the value is the only way to get it reduced, but time is running out to file a protest.

Kay Delasalle is helping her father protest the value of his home. She says the value is way up because the neighborhood has changed dramatically.

"There's a house very close by that is a huge house and it looks beautiful from the street, and their value, their asking price just recently listed is tremendous; it's several times over my father's," Delasalle said.

Delasalle adds her father's home is in less than perfect shape.

"Cracks, settling, much repair needs to be done," Delasalle said.

It's those kinds of details that can help lower the appraisal district's assessment of a property. Protesters who bring proof of structural issues and estimates of repair costs stand a good chance of winning and saving money too. But time is running out to file those protests.

"They have until June second, which is Monday," said Roland Altinger is the Deputy Chief Appraiser at the Harris County Appraisal District.

Altinger says property owners can mail in their protest forms post marked by June second or turn to HCAD's website and iFile.

"iFile system, you take your 13-digit account number, you look at your unique iFile number, get on the website and file the protest and get an instant confirmation back stating that we received your protest," he said.

You can also choose to have your protest settled online, but you must protest before Monday.

About 2 percent of homeowners still have not gotten their valuations from HCAD. For them, the deadline is 30 days after getting the notice.
